The city of Toronto, Ontario Canada. It is the capital of Ontario. Toronto is the most populous city in Canada. It is recognized as the most multicultural and cosmopolitan city in the world.
In it’s history it has always been a place where immigrants came and stayed. There are 200 distinct ethnic groups within the city. Most people speak English but you will find 160 other languages.

Due to it’s important and strategic location, Toronto has always been a place of human activity. First Nation people have been here for over 10,000 years. The British took the land from the Mississauga people and in 1793, named it York. In the war of 1812 the British suffered severe losses to American Troops. In 1834 the British renamed it Toronto.
The word Toronto comes from various French and English words. It’s meaning is loosely ‘narrows a channel of water between larger lakes.’ Toronto is where Lake Simcoe and Lake Couchiching meet. The Mohawk work Tkaronto means ‘the place where trees stand in the water.’
The current flag was designed by a young graphic designer who won a flag design contest in 1974. He said his design incorporates the twin towers of the city hall that then suggest a ‘T’. On the blue background is the Canadian Maple Leaf.

The current Toronto flag is well designed from a Vexillological stand point, (hint, hint Detroit…).
