“Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, is a landlocked country in Western Europe. It is bordered by Belgium to the west and north, Germany to the east, and France to the south. It is the smallest member of the European Union and the least populated sovereign country in Europe. It has three official languages: French, German, and the national language of Luxembourgish.”

Luxembourg’s history begins in 963 when Count Siegfried captured a rocky promontory (he held the high ground), that contained fortifications left by the Romans. Through wars and marriages the descendants of Siegfried increased their land holding.

Different close European nations attempted to take over Luxembourg but the Grand Duchy has survived. Today the Luxembourg passport is considered one of the best in the world, it has free and clear access to 187 different countries.

The variant flag I fly has Ten alternating stripes of white and light blue, with a red lion taken from the coat of arms superimposed on the center. My flag is more of a civil flag that is flown on special occasions. This one is well designed and with the distinctive red lion makes it easily recognizable. The lion is borrowed from the official coat of arms.

There is current debate about changing the official national flag to the red lion variant.
