What Flag Is That 05.12.21

True South Antarctica. The southern most continent in the world. It contains the South Pole. It is surrounded by the Southern Ocean. It is the fifth largest continent. It has a population of approximately 5,000 in the summer and maybe 1,000 in the winter.

98% of Antarctica is covered by ice. The ice is 1.2 miles thick and represents 90% of the worlds ice. It is the coldest, driest and windiest continent in the world. It was unseen until 1820 when Russian explorers came to see what was at the bottom of the world.

The word Antarctica is a Romanized version of the Greek word antarktikos which transliterated means ‘opposite of north’. It is governed by The Antarctic Treaty System, which is a cooperation of 38 nations.

You are far more likely to find Emperor Penguins than you are people.
I find it fascinating that the same organism that I found in the high desert of California is also found on Antarctica. Over 400 species of Lichen are found in this harsh ecosystem.

The True South Antarctica Flag was designed by conservationist Evan Townsend in 2018, when he was living in Antarctica. He made his first flag from scraps of tent and field bags. The flag is horizontal stripes of navy and white representing the long days and nights at extreme latitude. In the center a lone white peak erupts from a field of snow and ice. The peak casts a long shadow which is the compass arrow for south and together it forms a diamond. The diamond is the hope that Antarctica will forever be a center of peace, discovery and cooperation.

It is an excellent example of a good flag. My friends at ‘Flags for Good’ produce and sell this flag with half of the proceeds going to conservation efforts in Antarctica.
