The ‘blue marble’ earth flag. Created in 1970 by John McConnell the founder of Earth Day and a peace activist. It represents unity and peace and has served as an alternative to the official Earth Day Flag.
The other Earth Day flag was created by Ron Cobb in 1969. According to legend, it was created as a combination of the letters e and o, from the words environmentand organism. This flag was also based on the Stars and Stripes of the US Flag. Green was substituted in place of blue and red. The colors represent “pure air and green land” and environmental action.

The flag flying on the Flanders Flag Pole today is a blue field with the ‘blue marble’ photo in the middle. This famous photo was taken by the crew of Apollo 10. The flag has been an icon of the unity and peace movement. This symbolic creation has an association with renowned anthropologist Margaret Mead. Dr. Mead carried what she called “the flag for all people” with her wherever she appeared from 1969 until her death in 1977.
