
The Republic of Indonesia. A country in Southeast Asia and Oceania between India and The Pacific Ocean. It contains 17,000 islands, including Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi and parts of Borneo and Paupa New Guinea.

Indonesia is the worlds largest island nation. It is the 4th most populous country in the world. It is the most populous Muslim-majority country. The name comes from two Greek words: ‘Indos’ and ‘Nesos’ meaning Indian Islands. It was colonized by the Portuguese and Dutch. Invaded by Japan during WWII given it’s independence after the war, even though the Dutch attempted to ‘re-grab’ it.


The flag is a simple bi-color with red on the top and white on the bottom. The official flag was raised in 1945 after independence. The colors have a long history in this part of the world

The Indonesian flag, in one of the numerous languages that exist, is translated as ‘lofty bicolor red and white’. There are many opinions about the significance of the colors. A prominent theory is: red is for courage and white is for purity. The colors and design are a pattern found in various world flags.


Flag design has an interesting history and there is no real guidelines as to what can and cannot be included. Ted Kaye of NAVA has come up with rules for a good flag.
