The flag is a blue field with the state seal and motto placed in the center. The seal was designed by Ira Allen, Ethan Allen’s brother. It has a 14 branched pine tree (Vermont is the 14th state). There are two grain sheaths (agriculture) and a cow (dairy farming). The wavy lines above are probably for clouds. On the flag the Green Mountains are in the background. Freedom and Unity is the official motto of the state.

There has been some thought given to changing the official flag back to a historical flag. It is a distinct green field (the Green Mountains) with a blue canton containing 14 stars (14th state). It would be a bold move and one the legislature has not had the courage to seriously contemplate.
