What Flag Is that, 02.08.21

The northeastern state: Vermont. It is the only New England state that does not border the Atlantic Ocean. Vermont is the second least populated state in the union.

For 12,000 years host nation people had been in this area of the country. Vermont was fought over by the French and English. Finally at the conclusion of the Seven Years War, France ‘ceded’ the area to England. It is the first state to abolish slavery. Alexander Twilight was the first African American to graduate from college, Middlebury College in 1823.

The flag is a blue field with the state seal and motto placed in the center. The seal was designed by Ira Allen, Ethan Allen’s brother. It has a 14 branched pine tree (Vermont is the 14th state). There are two grain sheaths (agriculture) and a cow (dairy farming). The wavy lines above are probably for clouds. On the flag the Green Mountains are in the background. Freedom and Unity is the official motto of the state.

For a short period this was the state seal. It was changed back to the Ira Allen design

There has been some thought given to changing the official flag back to a historical flag. The Green Mountain Boys were a group that defended the territory and fought against the British in the Revolutionary War. It is a distinct green field (the Green Mountains) with a blue canton containing 14 stars (14th state). It would be a bold move and one the legislature has not had the courage to seriously contemplate.
