What Flag Is That, 02.06.21

The Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal (Nepal). A country in South Asia that includes mainly the Himalayans. It is landlocked with Tibet to the north and India to the south.

Nepal includes 8 of the 10 highest mountains in the world, including Mount Everest. The etymology of the name is not known with theories including the base ‘Ne, who was a Hindu Sage who protected the area, another explanation being the idea that the word comes from ‘Nipa’ meaning ‘foot of the mountain’ and ‘ala’ meaning abode – thus the home at the foot of the mountain.

The flag is the world’s only non-quadrilateral flag. It is a combination of two separate pennons (pennants) thus becoming a double pennon. Red represents bravery, and it is also the color of the national flower, the rhododendron. The blue border stands for peace. The top pennon has a white crescent moon with eight rays extending. The bottom pennon has a sun with eight rays shooting out. The idea is that the moon and sun stand for permanence, Nepal will last forever.

An interesting non traditional flag. I like different, and this flag is definitely different. And besides, without Nepal my Grandmother’s old neighbor would not have had a hit song…
