What Flag Is That, January 7, 2021

The state of New York. Another state flag that could be described as a blue bedsheet with the state seal slapped on the middle. The flag was adopted in 1901. The coat of arms was adopted in 1778. Due to the history of the coat of arms and it’s design (busy but distinct) I would give the flag a solid ‘C’.

A masted ship and a sloop on the Hudson River with a mountain range, a grassy shore with the sun rising in the background. The shield has two supporters. The one the left is liberty with a Phrygian Cap on a spear and her foot on the crown. The one on the right is Lady Justice with a blindfold (impartial), she is holding scales (fairness) and the sword for Justice. Surmounted on the crest is an Eagle on top of a globe. The word Excelsior is ‘Ever Upward’. E pluribus unum was added in 2020.
An ancient Phrygian cap. Also known as ‘the liberty cap’. Denise says it looks like the Hogwarts ‘Sorting Cap’.

Why do I have a flag of New York? Years ago Denise and I started taking our grandkids on a trip each year. Not as a group, but individually. When they turned 12 they could decide where they wanted to go. In 2013 when we asked Haley she immediately blurted out: “New York City!”

One of my favorite pictures by the famous photographers Denise Flanders
It was Haley and my first trip to NYC. Denise had been there before and had the subway system all figured out.
Central Park was amazing
Memories created and cherished
