What Flag Is That, January 6, 2021

The Republic of Kenya. A country in Eastern Africa. Kenya is bordered by South Sudan to the northwest, Ethiopia to the north, Somalia to the east, Uganda to the west, Tanzania to the south, and the Indian Ocean to the southeast.

The country is named after Mount Kenya – the highest mountain in Kenya (a 17er)

The country was colonized by various European nations before gaining it’s independence in 1963. The coat of arms was designed in 1963.

Two lions facing each other each holding a spear behind the shield. On the shield is a rooster holding an axe moving forward symbolizing hard work. Under the shield are plants including corn, pineapples and sunflowers. The moto “Harambee” translates to “Let’s pull together”.

The flag also adopted in 1963 is based on the colors of the political party Kenya African National Union [KANU]. The tricolor flag has three horizontal bands: Black (the people); Red (the blood of those who fought for freedom) and Green (for the land). The white fimbriation [in Vexillological terms fimbriation is a boarder separating colors,] was added later to symbolize ‘peace and harmony’. The Maasai shield with the two spears represents the defense of the people, the honor of those who fought for freedom and the land.

Several years ago Denise traveled to Kenya and Ethiopia to learn more about God and true faith. It was a life changing experience for her.
