“Yucatán, estado (state), southeastern Mexico. Occupying part of the northern Yucatán Peninsula, it is bounded to the north by the Gulf of Mexico, to the east and southeast by the state of Quintana Roo, and to the southwest and west by the state of Campeche.”

“Yucatán, officially the Free and Sovereign State of Yucatán, is one of the 31 states which, along with Mexico City, constitute the 32 federal entities of Mexico. It comprises 106 separate municipalities, and its capital city is Mérida.”

“Before the arrival of Spaniards, the peninsula was a very important region for the Maya civilization that reached the peak of its development here, where the Maya founded the cities of ChichenItza, Izamal, Motul, Mayapan, Ek’ Balam, and Ichkanzihóo (also called T’ho), now Mérida.”

The flag has been in existence since 1841. Initially it was designed to be a protest against the desire of the Mexican president to include the Yucatán Peninsula as a part of Mexico.

“Regarding the historical flag of the Republic of Yucatán, the historian Rodolfo Menéndez de la Peña describes the flag thus
The flag of Yucatán was divided into two parts: green on left, the right, with three divisions, red up and down and white in the middle. In the green field highlighted, five stars, symbolizing the five departments that Yucatan was divided by decree of November 30, 1840: Mérida, Izamal, Valladolid, Tekax and Campeche.
The meaning of the colors of the state flag are as follows:
Green: land.
White: religion.
Red: blood.”
The flag is an important cultural symbol and is loved by the people of the Yucatán. It is found on cars, shirts, posters etc and remains a representation of the tensions with the central Mexican Government.
