The Royal Banner of Scotland. Also called the Red Rampant Lion Flag. It represents the Royal (Monarchy) Family of Scotland.

Scotland is a country within the United Kingdom, covering the northern third of Great Britain. It is a difficult concept for us in the US to think about a country within a country. The name Scotland most likely comes from the Latin ‘Scoti’ which was Latin for Gaels (the people from this region). Originally found in the Greek ‘Skotos’ which transliterates as ‘darkness, gloom’.
The history of Scotland from the Middle Ages involves a long line of monarchs named James. Up to this day there remains tension between the monarchs and people of Scotland and England.

The difficulties begin with King James, the king of England, Scotland, and Ireland from 1685 to 1688, and the last Stuart monarch in the direct male line. He was deposed in the Glorious Revolution(1688–89) and replaced by William III and Mary II. That revolution, engendered by James’s Roman Catholicism, permanently established Parliament as the ruling power of England. Many thought only a Catholic should be the monarch, and this led to the formation of the Church of England.

James’ son, James Francis Edward Stuart, who became known as ‘The Old Pretender’ (Guy who thinks he should be King) hangs around waiting for something to happen. It is here that the French become more active. France says, ‘Oh ya, we recognize James as the rightful King of Britian.’ This didn’t exactly help the situation.

Meanwhile James has a son who was born in Rome and when he is a young man, Charles Edward Louis John Sylvester Maria Casimir Stuart decides dear old dad is not being aggressive enough about the whole King thing so the ‘Young Pretender’, now known as ‘Bonnie Prince Charles’ goes to France to ask for military support to take the crown by force.

The French are hesitant about the Young Pretender and become ‘wishy washy’ about what they will offer. Bonnie Prince Charles travels all over Europe looking for support. He finally goes to Scotland where he decides the rebel group known as the Jacobites might be his best bet.

After some success and with the hope that the French will come through, Bonnie Prince Charles actually walks into Hollyrood Palace in Edinburgh. Today, August 19, is considered the true beginning of the Jacobite Rebellion in support of the Young Pretender.

There were a few successful campaigns but the conclusion and end came at the Battle of Cullodon where the English Red Coats overwhelmed the rag tag exhausted Jacobites. Bonnie Prince Charles slinks away and spends the rest of his unhappy life in Europe. The Royal banner of Scotland forever belongs to the English.
