Now to the land of ‘what if’. The International Flag of Planet Earth. What if there was a symbol that could represent not only the planet where we live, but the residents on that planet, humanity, all life forms, oceans, land. To remind the people of Earth that we share this planet, no matter national boundaries; that we should take care of each other and the planet we live on. What would that flag look like?

There is that ‘Blue Marble’ flag designed from the famous photo taken in space, but that isn’t utilizing vexillogical skills or principles.

People attach so much to a piece of cloth hooked to a pole. It is emotional, they fight for and pledge allegiance to this symbol – this is us. Could there be a symbol for all that is involved, a ‘this is all of us?’

Enter into the discussion a student from Sweden, Oskar Pernefeld. As a senior project for his degree he decided to use good Vexillologist ideas and create a flag for Planet Earth.

The field of the flag is a dark blue, representing the oceans that cover most of the earth. Seven interlocked rings forming a flower shape, symbolizing life and interconnectedness on Earth. The rings represent the connection of all life on the planet and may also symbolize the seven continents.

My good friend, Michael, at Flags For Good, has been a big promoter of this flag. (Flags For Good sell the flag). Here is a video he did to explain it. [It is a little long, watch as much as you would like.]
