What flag is that 05.21.2025

Pays de Leon (The County of Leon) “a feudal state  [Feudalism, also known as the feudal system, was a combination of legal, economic, military, cultural, and political customs that flourished in medieval Europe from the 9th to 15th centuries. Broadly defined, it was a way of structuring society around relationships derived from the holding of land in exchange for service or labour] in extreme western Brittany in the High Middle Ages (1000 – 1300 BC) Though nominally a vassal of the sovereign duke of Brittany,

Léon was functionally independent of any external controls until the viscounts came under attack by King Henry II of England. It thus became the focus of revolts and wars when Brittany was drawn into the Angevin empire.”

Henry II of England, who controlled most of England, Wales, Ireland and since it was just across the English Channel he also controlled most of Brittany.

Leon was the homeland of the Leonards who are in Breton called Leonardo: Leoniz. As the name implies, it means Lions. So, people who live in Leon were called the Leonards.

The Flag of Leon has a Morne, which historically in heraldic vocabulary was a Lion with no claws or teeth standing up. The Leon lion is black then place in the center of a yellow background.

Why would I have a French Flag? Besides being fascinated with European and British flags, I have always enjoyed flags with lion or dragons. I know the history of those countries is far more extensive than the USA, but Boyhowdy, those folks know how to make a flag. And besides, our son is Leon and my middle name is Leonard – see that fits.

This was a tough flag to write up. Most of the material I found was in French so I had to run it through a translation app to understand.
