The flag of the City of Bruges, Luxembourg

Bruges is the capital of and largest city of the province of West Flanders in the Flemish Region of Belgium. Bruges is a major tourist destination within Belgium. It is a beautiful city with historic significance due to its preservation of medieval ancient architecture. It is a prominent UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Its strategic port location has made it into a key economic area for Belgium and this part of Europe. In the 7th Century the Roman’s built bridges all over the area and the name Bruges most likely is derived from the Roman word for bridge. The sea flooded the area carving out channels and waterways, making transportation by barges and gondolas necessary and popular.

The port made commerce a major economic factor. The Market Place is a modern tourist attraction.
Because of its location it was of major interest to the Germans in both World Wars. Amazingly no destruction of the ancient architecture ever occured.
The Belfry of Bruges was begun in 1248 and is the major attraction of the city market. It is the second tallest solely brick structure in the world.
The flag is a banner of the municipal coat of arms. The municipal flag of Bruges is horizontally divided into eight white-red-white-red-white-red-white-red stripes with a blue lion in the middle. The lion has a yellow crown and necklace with a small yellow cross and red claws.
According to Gemeentewapens in België – Vlaanderen en Brussel, the flag was adopted by the Municipal Council on 26 October 1982, confirmed by the Executive of Flanders on 1 July 1986 and published in the Belgian official gazette on 3 December 1987.
Bruges is a place that is on our ‘bucket list’ to visit.
