Why are Canadian Flags at ‘Half Mast’ on June 23?

[FYI: In the USA we refer to it as ‘Half Staff’ In Canada it is called ‘Half Mast’, it means the same thing – the flag is first raised all the way to the top then slowly lowered to half way up.]

It is officially known as ‘The Day of Remembrance for Victims of Terrorism.’ Every flag ‘pole’ on government buildings and public are at ‘Half mast’, as mandated by the Federal Government.

On June 23, 1985, Air India Flight 182, boarding in Montreal on its way to London was the victim to an onboard bomb. It is the worst air disaster in Canadian History, resulting in the worst mass murder of Canadian citizens ever. In all, 329 lives were lost.

In 2005 June 23rd was proclaimed ‘National Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Terrorism’. For 39 years our sisters and brothers to the North stop and think about this horrific disaster. We grieve along with them.
