With Veterans Day coming in a couple of days, I fly a flag that is recognized around the world. Before the US changed it to Veterans Day, it was known as Armistice Day or The Day of Remembrance. This flag is known by most of the rest of the Allied Nations as the proper symbol for the day World War I came to a conclusion.

At 5:45 am representatives from all of the Allied Nations met with members of the German government in Compiegne France to sign the agreement stating that at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 all hostilities would end on the western front of World War I. The armistice initially expired after a period of 36 days and had to be extended several times. A formal peace agreement was only reached when the Treaty of Versailles was signed the following year.

Most of the Allied partners have November 11th as a Day of Remembrance. Almost all of them make it a national holiday. ( It has been a statutory holiday in Serbia since 2012. Serbia is an Allied force that suffered the largest casualty rate in World War I. To commemorate their victims, people in Serbia wear Natalie’s ramonda as a symbol of remembrance.)

The United States changed November 11th to Veterans Day to honor all members of any military service. Memorial Day is to honor all veterans who gave the ultimate in service to their country.
